Hello Falcons, and welcome to the St. John of Nepomuk Catholic School Music Program!

My name is Erin Burris. I am from Norman, OK and I attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University where I majored in Music Education. I am certified in Levels 1 and 2 Kodaly Method of music education from the University of Oklahoma Kodaly Institute. I have been teaching for 3 years and this is my third year at St. John’s! I am also the music teacher at St. Philip Neri in Midwest City, OK.

The Kodaly Method of music education is a developmental approach to music education focusing on singing, music from the local folk culture, and musical literacy (reading and writing music). Zoltan Kodaly believed that education of a child should begin 9 months prior to the birth of their mother, which is why I am so blessed to be able to teach children from Pre-K 3 to 8th grade!

My personal teaching philosophy as well as my Kodaly training has led me to believe that music education is one of the most important skills to develop in a child’s life as it can shape the way your brain and body work. I believe that music can further a child’s skill development in all areas including math, empathy, self-discipline, hearing ability, micro and macro kinesthetic ability, and so much more. Students in my class experience steady beat activities, inner hearing, dance and movement, musical stories, instrumental music, games, visual music, musical literacy and more! My students and I have so much fun every day, it’s hard to believe they are actually becoming such talented musicians!

We have two major performances during the year that all of he students participate in. In December, during Advent, we come together to celebrate Christmas coming by performing a Christmas Program. This is a spiritually-based program giving an account of the Nativity in creative ways incorporating music, acting, speech, costumes, props, set design, and sometimes dance! The other is Fine Arts’ Day which happens in May. This is an ever-changing program; last year we did an early childhood program for PK3-Kindergarten. We have a lot of fun with this program!

I always encourage parent involvement in the music program. Please feel free to email me with any questions you may have about my class or upcoming programs. Thank you for choosing St. John’s to educate your children. It’s such an amazing place to work and learn and I love seeing the kids engaged in a positive learning environment where they can be themselves and practice their faith every day.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Erin Burris
